Audrey Severson: Suzuki Piano Teacher
Audrey Severson is a local Suzuki piano teacher in the Greater Richmond area. Her vision is to bring the gift and enjoyment of music into the lives of children and adults. Audrey has a BA in Music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Music. She has received Teacher Training from Mary Craig Powell, an internationally known teacher, during her Suzuki Teacher Training at Capital University Conservatory of Music in Columbus, Ohio. Additionally, formal training was continued in both Colorado and Ohio. She is also registered to teach Music Mind Games, a game-oriented, interactive approach to theory training.
Audrey has been under musical instruction for the greater part of her growing up years and has experienced many different styles and methods of teaching. Consequently, this put her on a quest to find a teaching philosophy which was well-rounded and considered the needs of the student and their learning style. The Suzuki method, the primary method with which she teaches, involves internalizing music through listening, and training the talent the student has been given from birth. In addition, another aspect of the Suzuki method is that the parents are intricately involved alongside their child as a student. Fundamentally working in a triangle of teacher, student, and parent is an essential aspect to teaching that prioritizes the child. Though the Suzuki method, as stated above, is the primary focus of teaching, some traditional aspects of teaching, namely sight-reading, are also filtered in very early on in the student's education.
